I read Mr. Shirley’s piece and I have to say that I can’t find much to disagree with. I think it’s a shame that he was fired for expressing his opinions when those opinions were posted on his own personal blog and in no way did he profess to be speaking on behalf of ESPN. How terrible, that a person cannot speak freely outside one’s professional capacity without suffering professional repercussions. That may sound fine to people who disagreed with him and clamored for his head on a plate, but I hope those same people are prepared to either suffer the same fate as Mr. Shirley or stifle their own expression to avoid it should they ever happen to find their own opinions on a different subject matter to be as unpopular.
