Mika - Of course. I'm not asking for people to artificially care. I just hope they can avoid getting in the way of women who are trying to play the game.

Mick - Slap shooting kittens sounds like an awesome idea. I hate cats. ps: The Canadian men did the exact same thing in Salt Lake. The IOC sucks, plain and simple. And Jacques Rogges can take Marie-Philippe Poulin's cigar and insert it in a more convenient location.

Chad - Thank you for that comment. It's really appreciated. I think you're right on with your comments on the sport's polarity. Where I'm from however, it's more of a unifier. Hockey doesn't really have baseball and football as legit competition. Which I'm sure was plainly obvious while watching the Vancouver games. Anyway, glad you enjoy the sport.

Incredible piece. I am, admittedly, slightly bias as I love hockey above all other sports. My life unfolded quite differently than how your parents did as described above. I grew in a hockey town (Buffalo) but unfortunately did not discover my love for the game until later on in life and I can tell you it hit me like a ton of bricks too. The sports seems to be a somewhat polarizing one. If you get it, you REALLY get it, and if you don't there doesn't seem to be much in between. It's sad because of how incredible the sport and athletes (of both sexes) are. You story reminded me of when I finally discovered how much this game could really mean to me and told my mother how she described growing up playing pond hockey in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. It about blew my mind for one as this was not something I generally pictured my mother doing and for two that she did not impart this knowledge and love to me earlier. We can only take things as they come so I have done what I can to learn and play since then. I fully agree that while it may be tough to integrate the sexes the women certainly do deserve their spot to shine amongst the men especially in this sport that is equally as gracefully and balletic as it is physically grinding. Great article and thank you for sharing some wonderful family history and memories of yours.

And P.S. if you win Olympic gold you should be allowed to celebrate by slap-shooting kittens into empty nets for all I care. Drinking on the ice is no big deal.

Some day Sweeden will beat the Canadian women, but I still think Canadians will care more if the men lose to the US or Russia. Howeve, you can bet your ass that the Canadian women's present team would have outscored some of the men's teams who won gold on the ice for Canada in the early days of the winter games.

During the lead up to the Olympics, the women's DID play against men's midget teams (15-16-year-olds) and routinely lost.
