adelsig- "shit or get off the pot…as long as your significant other is shitting with you." I like that :)

Scott- You're so right.

Lover of Love- Don't worry. There ARE great men out there. I know we've all heard things like, "All men are bastards," "All men are dogs," etc. But that couldn't be further from the truth. I've met plenty of great men who only have the best of intentions (not via JDate though, ha). But my good relationships/experiences have all been drama-free, so if I wrote about those, I might lose my audience due to boredom :)

Matt- This is how I imagine it. Seth's mother said, "You need to start dating someone!" So he joined JDate. Then Marissa clung to him and they created a relationship out of nothing. Then, a year and a half later, his mother said, "You've been w/ this girl for 18 months. It's time for you to propose! I'm dragging your ass over to Tiffany and Co. and you're going to pick out a ring for Marissa. Or else."

Daniel- You're right. When two people whose personalities clash decide to force a relationship, there's always explosive drama. And then, excessive complaining about the drama to everyone within earshot. And that does get tiresome.

Some people just prefer to be miserable with someone else than being even more miserable alone. And to that I say: fuck those people. I've had friends like that before, and they are just incredibly tiresome. Grow up and learn to like yourself, or kill yourself. It will save everyone a lot of time.

This is a great piece. I don't find Marissa's behaviour all that surprising, having encountered a Marissa or two of my own over the years, but I'm baffled by Seth. Why is he marrying her? Also, how did this engagement come about? It's difficult to imagine him asking her, given what you've said.

People really are strange.

Love your stories. but Randi, when will we get one with a happy ending? to give us single women some hope that not all the men out there are the weirdos you blog about. I hope you and your missing piece may reconnect in the future :)

Urgh, I wish we could edit our own comments (Paul?) here. I just realized I have a dreaded 'ending preposition' and I live in abject fear of the grammar police lambasting me for all the world to see.

Oh wait, fuck them.

It's amazing what some people will subject themselves to in order to:

1. Fill some sort of void in their life.
2. Satisfy the wishes of others (aka, the Jewish Mother Syndrome).

I think what it comes down to is emotional immaturity. Some people - perhaps through the influence of overzealous parenting or a simple refusal to face reality - just do not know who they really are. Without knowing yourself, how can you know when you meet someone with whom you can truly be happy with?

I have tried to help these kind of people realize their folly in the past, but they are simply incapable of rational thought when they see what they perceive as their one chance of happiness.

*sigh*

"...my missing piece and I parted ways, but that experience taught me something very important: not just the depths to which two people can love each other, and that it’s possible to love someone more than I love myself"

being married randi, that's exactly what it's about. it's bad seeing couples that are detined to fail. worse when one of them is a good friend of yours. even worse when they both are. my wife and i have a couple just like this we are both friends with - they lasted 6 months married.

i guess it's shit or get off the pot...as long as your significant other is shitting with you. :)
