Bum Signage, by Matt Shirley

Bum Signage, by Matt Shirley

Homeless people have it rough. Which is probably why I’m not really looking forward to joining their ranks here in a few months when my savings account goes dry and my joblessness comes back to spin-kick me in the package.

But when the time comes to hit the streets, I will be ready. Because as that young Boy Scout deep inside me (?) always tells me, I must prepare for when that time comes—the time where I leave the days of shelter, food, and non-sweaty crotches behind me.

To be prepared, I must hone the timeless hobo-craft of peddling. My signs must outshine all others, so I can earn enough quarters to buy that plastic bottle of Popov medicine that will get me through another homeless night on the streets of Los Angeles. And so that I can scavenge enough money to buy a little food so I fulfill every bum’s ever-present goal of not dying.

My signs will hold the key to my life. And so if you see any of these, make sure you give the bum holding them, a dime or two.
