The Drive-By Truckers are coming to Kansas City.
And, thanks to Traci T at Thirty Tigers PR, I have two tickets to give away.
The Truckers play Crossroads in downtown Kansas City on Sunday, September 26.
I write and talk about the Drive-By Truckers a lot. If asked, my FlipCast co-host, Mick Shaffer, would say “more than a lot; too much, in fact”.
The Truckers are on my mind so much because I think they’re one of the best bands going. I’ve seen them live three times – once in a sweaty juke joint in New Orleans two days before Katrina arrived, and twice at Lollapalooza. I left more impressed with each show. It seems to me that they only get better with time.
The same goes for their recorded material. Their most recent album, The Big To-Do, features two songs that will be on any year-end top ten I might do. Witness the opening line from “Birthday Boy”:
Which one’s the birthday boy, she said, I ain’t got all night.
But before the hyperbole gets too thick, I’ll get to the point: How to win the tickets to the Truckers’ show in Kansas City.
You have two options:
1. Figure out how many Drive-By Truckers songs Mick and I have played on FlipCast.
(Hint: There’s an easy way to do this, using a particular page on this website. There’s also a hard way to do this, using your ears.)
Or,
2. Guess (or, if you’ve been reading me for a long time, recall) which Drive-By Truckers song is my all-time favorite.
(Hint: It’s not from their most recent album.)
Send an answer to me at mysocalledcareer@gmail.com. Both options are weighted equally; I won’t give preference to either. (Although I will be impressed if you carry #2 around in your brain.) I will draw a winner* from the correct answers and will email you if you’ve won. Contest ends on September 23, at noon CT.
If you don’t win, consider shelling out the $21.50 it costs to go. If you’re disappointed, you can come find me at the back of the show and I’ll buy you a beer.
Paul

It used to be simple. You got the girl’s number, you called her, you hoped you’d get her voicemail, you waited for her to call back, you made a plan to get Italian. But now? Now, nobody uses the telephone for the “phone” part. So, unless the girl is not a girl at all – i.e. over 40 – you’re going to need to send a text message. ...
