Funny Pictures with Captions (Or Are They?), by Matt Shirley

23 Feb 2012

If you’ve recently visited the Internet, you’ve probably noticed the propensity some people have had lately to making, sharing, and commenting on captioned “funny pictures.” Especially in the world of Facebook, these sorts of pictures have become as common as bad tattoo self-portraits and the misuse of your/you’re.

On a grander scale, it’s all about memes. (Personally I kind of think calling something a meme is a bit of a meme but whatever.) These memes – Shit _____ Says videos, Rick Rolling, Lolcats, and anything with the word ‘epic’ in it – are short-lived Internet fads that last a couple days before sputtering into abyssal irrelevance.

Bet you thought I was going to make a joke here about something that doesn’t last a long time like a Starcraft nerd inside of Miranda Kerr or a GOP candidate’s election bid. Nope, too mature for that.

Today I strap on my follower helmet and add my entries into the great pool of unoriginal Internet garbage.

1. The Sort Of Inspirational Poster-Looking Thing

2. Lolcats. (Cat pictures with captions.)

3. The Career Builder

4. The Six-Segmented That People Are SO Going To Relate To

Sorry about that.
